Wonderful Town at Chicago’s Goodman Theater

A few winters ago I was contacted by Tony® Award-winning, Broadway Director Mary Zimmerman (Metamorphoses) and Tony® Award-winning Set Designer Todd Rosenthal (August: Osage County) for the usage rights of my “Broadway Bound” illustration (pictured above). The award-winning duo were conceptualizing the set design of their Summer production of the beloved Leonard Bernstein musical Wonderful Town at Chicago’s Goodman Theater’s legendary Albert Stage. During their search they had found my illustration on Pinterest and immediately loved it. “When working on a set, we do all types of research and look at many images. There was something special about the lighthearted nature of that illustration and its portrayal of the buildings of the New York skycap”, said Mary Zimmerman in an article for Playbill.

Being a theater enthusiast, I immediately granted them licensing rights. I have always loved theater and even contemplated a career in set design, however I eventually chose a different career path and left the idea of working in theater behind. It’s interesting how dreams sometimes can come round full circle. Later that summer my illustration was beautifully brought to life in an amazing collaboration that I will cherish forever.
